Salima Sugar Company Limited is set to extend sponsorship for Mighty Wanderers FC from next month.

The initial K60 million nine-month deal expires this month.

A source confided in Weekend Nation yesterday that the deal will be extended under revised conditions, including the package.

Said the source: “In principle, an agreement has been reached; what remains, however, is the actual package.”

He said as part of the agreement, the Nomads will from this afternoon be putting on Salima Sugar-branded uniform.

“Actually, the sponsor has already provided the uniforms and the branding will extend to other areas such as team bus and club house,” the source added.

The source further said in their proposal, Wanderers are asking for a package of not less than K250 million.

“According to the request, Wanderers say their budget for this season is pegged at K500 million and they would, therefore,  be comfortable with an offer of not less than half that amount,” said the source.

On the other hand, Salima Sugar are asking for a vibrant marketing of their product using the Nomads brand.

Salima Sugar company secretary Charles Thupi confirmed that they have resolved to extend the sponsorship, but said there are “some details to be finalised and we are still talking”.

Nomads board secretary Humphrey Mvula said while there has been progress, it would be premature to comment further.

He said: “We are agreeing on some areas, but we do not have the details.

“When we sign details of the agreement, that is when we can say the deal is done, but so far we don’t have them [details].”

The Nomads are reportedly still courting their former president and board chairperson Thomson Mpinganjira to consider taking over the club’s ownership, but some of the board members are demanding an extraordinary general meeting to first dissolve the board before offering the team to Mpinganjira.

The business mogul and philanthropist spent about K180 million on the club’s operations last season, including players’ outstanding game bonuses spanning two seasons, allowances and salaries.

The Nomads started the 2022 season on a bad note, losing 2-1 to their age-old rivals Nyasa Big Bullets last weekend,  sparking calls from some quarters to commercialise the club.
